Where and how to buy a kitchen

Locations of stores in Hamburg, other advice

Hi Everyone,

Was wondering if any of you out there might be able to help me with this one!

It looks as if we might have secured ourselves a lovely, newly renovated apartment here in Hamburg. Everything will be newly repainted and it will have new bathrooms etc. However, we will need to supply our own kitchen. I realise that this is fairly common in Germany but to be honest I don't even know where to start looking and certainly don't know what I should be budgeting. I had friends in Vienna (who I have now lost touch with) who had bought a lovely modern unfitted kitchen that they had installed and that they could take with them when they left. Something like that would be ideal, but I am open to any suggestions or pointers on where to start!

Thanks for your help!!

Hamburg is a big place (I been living / working in area 25+ years). Depends a bit what part of Hamburg you are in.
There is an IKEA near Schnelsen Nord A7 exit (same exit as for airport but t'other direction). Try to avoid going there on a Saturday.

As an alternative (particularly if you live in the North => West quadrant) is to go up the A23 to Halstenbek where there is the "Wohnmeile" with numerous large places...

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your help. We are in the Harvestehude area. To be honest, we don't mind travelling to find the right thing. It doesn't have to be in the neighbourhood. What is the general concensus on IKEA kitchens as far as quality. I know they are probably pretty good value but are the appliances any good? My only experience of IKEA was while I was living in Abu Dhabi. My company furnished my apartment exclusively with IKEA furniture. It was okay, but not always that sturdy...

I got an Ikea kitchen. It cost about €3000 including a dishwasher, cooker and hob and the quality is fine.

They are pretty easy to install if you have done that sort of thing before but it's probably worth getting them to do it if not.

They deliver, so your location doesn't really matter, that old fart in the previous post always seems to look for problems instead of solutions smile.gif

Anyway, I suppose the acid test is would I buy another one from Ikea; and the answer is "yes".

If you succeed at IKEA:

Just got back from IKEA and looks serious. Price wise IKEA is not as cheap as one might think but the quality is OK.

I like when old people fight about who is older laugh.gif Just started saying "20 years ago..." a few weeks ago. dry.gif

whatever you do DONT buy an IKEA kitchen you wont be able to get parts in case something breaks and not even the professionals are able to fix it without changing the sink pipes etc. coz ikea doesnt use any kind of "norm" for their stuff. tell you it aint funny if it breaks, just had that one!

Just tried to edit that but it didnt wanna work for some reason. just meant to add:

No i wasnt ripped off! IKEA doesnt do parts to fix their kitchens! luckily i had a friend who fixed it for free but it was necessary to change the sink and all the pipes. he wasnt even able to get parts through his company (where he does stuff like fixing kitchens for a living) and he tried every single contact they had!

Having fitted umpteen kitchens as a subcontractor in the UK and here,
my cynicism is unbounded.
A kitchen is the carcases, the doors, the tiled walls, electrics, plumbing, the worktops and the appliances
plus the design and the skill of the person fitting it.
Try Roller, Domäne and advertise in the local free paper for a friendly
person who will install it cash in hand (quite legal).
Design it yourself and remember, almost all the bits are basically cheap
(except fancy granite worktops etc. - which you should subcontract yourself separately).
You need someone who can tile walls, do basic electrics and plumbing
plus medium skills in joinery.
Check the worktops are level! (only needs a spirit level).
Watch out for loose edgings underneath (knock with the vacuum cleaner
and they're away)
If you must have a built in fridge as part of the kitchen - these
are difficult to install and give problems.
Straight walls and 90 degree angles are OK - weird shaped worktops cost!
Avoid Kitchen studios - everything is subcontracted anyway.
Why pay salesman's commission and EUR 15,000 for what you can
organize yourself for a fraction of the cost?

We had a new kitchen installed last month. Went to IKEA first and they were not very helpful, just told us to use their software and come back to them. Unfortunately if your kitchen is not of a standard layout then the software is useless. IKEA provide a service through a third party company where they will come and measure your kitchen and send you the plans, think it costs €60 and you get this money back if you buy your kitchen with IKEA. We took this option and then went and looked at the IKEA kitchens but they were not very flexible. Our layout was extremely tight with only mm to work with it so if something was not exactly right then we would be out of luck. We had a certain layout in mind but IKEA were not accommodating to this. We then went to Dodenhof in Kaltenkirchen. It's a little more expensive but the quality and selection is much better and they were really helpful and friendly. We told them what we wanted, showed them the kitchen plan and we sat down together for a few hours to work it out and signed the contract. It was very tight but they send someone out to you to recheck all the measurements before they put the kitchen together for you. They also put together a plan for where all the pipes and power sockets should be. It was fast, about 6 weeks from when we signed the contract until it was installed. Very happy with the result and I would recommend them to anyone!
