I still haven't got mine for the coming year. Should i be getting worried? Everyone i know got theirs weeks ago!

UGH! Why's it ALWAYS me?!?
pepper
Best to phone KVR and ask !

I had a similar problem a few years ago, and it was because although I had informed them that I was moving, they still sent mine to the old address. After calling them, everything was sorted, and I got it within two days.
xargon
What happens if you lose your lohnsteuerkarte? Is it possible to get another one without hassle?

theres a form you can request a new one which is on www.muenchen.de, but that only says you can request one with tax band 6, and i've NO idea what that means! I was planning on just sending that off but it's probably wrong...
pepper
Well I am tax band 1, single, no children etc. Which basically means, they take as much as they want, as they believe you do not need it !
Paul_Schlong
do any tax experts know what tax band 6 is then?
ashu
Must be the one with the highest tax rate. The company that is doing my paperwork asked me for my tax card last week. He said if i didn't get it to him in time, I will be marked as tax category 6. I think tax category 6 basically means rip my clothes and take every cent I got tongue.gif

Tax 1, I'm pretty sure is the lowest amount they take out. That's what students, like myself, with low income are in. I was accidentally got shot up to tax 6 for a month and my taxes more than doubled which meant they were taking almost half my paycheck (fortunately got it all back the next month).

oh i've been threatened with that before actually!

Tax class 1 is not the lowest, but it is the "normal" class for anyone single and without kids etc.

Tax classes 3,4 and 5 are for married people. Tax class 3 is the lowest taxed class of the lot from what I can tell.. 4 is basically the same tax rate as class 1, but for married people and tax class 5 is higher (A couple on 3 and 5 can work out better overall).

If you get a second job, you need a 2nd tax card and this would be tax class 6. It is the assumed tax class if you cannot prove you are tax class 1 (say, by having your tax card). It is a very high tax rate. I got stung by the "we'll put you on tax class 6 until we get your tax card" thing and I was completely broke because of it for a while. It is perfectly possible to claim it back though once you prove your correct tax class, either through your employer or through your tax returns if your employer cant do it.

Dunno what class 2 is
BadDoggie
German tax classes in brief:

Class 1: Standard for singles, divorced, long-term separated.
Class 2: Class 1 people with at least one kid living with them
Class 3: For marrieds when only one is earning or when the other takes Class 5
Class 4: Same as Class 1 but for marrieds.
Class 5: For marrieds when one is earning substantially less than the other
Class 6: For second job (or third, highest taxation)

There's a bit more to it but them's the basics.

woof.
Paul_Schlong
Although maybe it might come before the end of the year. At work i've read:

"Bis Ende diese Jahres erhalten Sie Ihre Lohnsteuerkarte für das kommende Jahr"

Which implies it could still be on its way maybe...

UGH!
natasa
Well it is actually better for married people to take class 4 rather than taking 3 and 5 because they get more at the end of the year.

Class 2 is for single parents
pepper
I would still call KVR, as usually mine arrives around September/November and my surname starts with W, so I would have expected that I would have been one of the last !

It depends on how much each makes. When the income difference between the married couple is >30%, III/V is usually the best choice. So sayeth two Steuerberater.

And "get more back at the end of the year"? You mean, get back your money that you earned but let the governement take and use for an entire year interest-free? A big tax refund means they were taking too much to begin with.

That's pretty much what I wrote, but I specified it's ONLY for the single parent with whom the child lives.

Paul_Schlong
my surname begins with C so i'll ring em asap!
Tom17
Yep III/V is defo the best option if there is a large difference in earnings. You can see it for yourself simply by plugging numbers into the online tax calculators (dont have the URL handy).

i didnt get mine last year (last name also starts w/c - maybe they just dont like us?) and went into the anmeldestelle (faster than the kvr) and they just printed another one right out for me. the quickest onset of action i've seen in this bureaucracy!
xargon
@cardnaxela: anmeldestelle. Where exactly is this located? is it in the building on Poccistrasse?

Cheers!

I hope somebody checks this thread smile.gif. So I got a part time job for a few months, I already have my permit and I just need my Lohsteuerkarte... my husband makes much more than me so I guess I should be class V. I got my work permit as a "Wissenschaftler" so I was wondering if there is another tax class for that.

Many thanks!
