Coq Au Vin
This cosy, and really rather charming, little place in Sachsenhausen is only open in the evenings. The "prix fixe" menus (20 for three courses or 29 for four courses with three choices for each course) highlight traditional French cuisine with an engaging selection covering meat, game and fish/seafood (though vegetarians are advised to stay away). The wine list covers the main wine regions of France, and, if the boss is paying, there is a selection of fine bordeaux on the "special" list. The standard of cooking is generally good, verging on the very good, though it never quite reaches the heights of the best of French cooking - and the desserts, though impeccably presented, are surprisingly weak, lacking either the punch or the finesse to end on a prandial high. The portions, though not exactly huge, are satisfying and should sate all but the biggest appetites. Booking is advisable. Recommended.
