Hi!

I was just wondering that if I have good running shoes can I use them during a hike or do I really have to have hiking boots?

And is there a hiking trip planned on the next weekend? I would really love to join you! :)

Hi sinituulia,

running shoes will be ok on forest tracks and after a decent dry spell.

However, after all the rain we've had, if it gets muddy, then you might regret not having proper walking shoes or boots.

I'd like to do a walk tomorrow, so will try to think of something and post it here.

Many Manufacturers Divide Their Footwear Into A, B, C And D Categories.

  1. Category A Footwear Is Generally Lightweight And Very Flexible. These Boots And Shoes Are Designed For Light Activities, I.E. Travelling, Walking Or Everyday Use.
  2. Category B Footwear Has A More Solid Construction And Firmer Foothold For Longer Hikes And Easy Treks.
  3. Boots In The C Category Are Mostly Suitable For Hybrid Step-In (Also Called Semi-Automatic) Crampons And Designed For Longer (Multi-Day) Treks On Rough Terrain With A Heavy Rucksack.
  4. Category D Boots Are Fully Compatible With Step-In (Also Called Automatic, Clip-On Or Rigid Crampons) And Have A Robust Construction Designed For Glaciers, Mountaineering And Ice Climbing.

To join a hike in the Bavarian Alps Category B to C is recommended.
As the trips organised on Toytown hardly ever go along a smooth forest road.

I can recommend the Yukon Lady by Hanwag.

But keep in mind that you have to wax leather boots to make them waterproof.

Hi sinituulia,

I recommend Outdoor Schuhe on Kapuzinerplatz, they have a 'test track' where you can see how much ankle support your potential purchase gives you. They don't go for a quick sell as they know boots have to fit right.

And CandyQ is right - look after your boots & they'll look after you...

A good salesman will tell you to go for at least one size bigger than your usual shoe size. Otherwise you might end up with blisters after a day of hiking as your feet will be swollen. Plus it takes a few hikes to break in your new hiking boots, but afterwards you'll enjoy them for years if you look after them.

Who is interested in a medium hiking trip from Lenggries to Bad Wiessee via Maximiliansweg?
Second try, at least the weather forecast looks promising this time. ;-)

Route:
Lenggries - Geierstein (1491 m) - Fockenstein (1564 m) Aueralm (1299 m) - Bad Wiessee.
Walking time = ~7h, distance = 17 km, elevation gain = 1100 hm.

We'll stop at Aueralm for lunch.
Nevertheless bring plenty of snacks and water along.

Depending on the weather we’ll either take a bus or a boat to Tegernsee once we arrive in Bad Wiessee.
Ferry tickets are €5.20 per person.

Meeting point:
Munich Hauptbahnhof, in front of platform 34, at 06.45am on Sunday 28.June.2015.
Price of the train ticket will be split evenly between the group.

Return to Munich:
~ 7pm-ish

As always: if we travel by BOB I won't need a ticket.
