James Cruickshank’s distinguished career has taken him on an extended intercontinental trajectory with some of Australia’s finest musical exports. His peculiar artistic vision has most recently borne fruit of a third solo album, Note To Self, earning accolades equal to his earlier, idiosyncratic productions, Hymn to Her and Hello Human.

With a career spanning three decades, more than twelve studio albums and untold shows across the world, Cruickshank is among Australia's most prolific musicians.

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1962, Cruickshank developed a deep love of music from an early age via his grandmothers pianola. At 19, he discovered Neil Young, formed a couple of cover bands that played too loud at friends birthday parties, then moved to Sydney at 23 to form his first original band, Gargoyles, who recorded an album which was never released.

At 24 Cruickshank completed a BA in Communications. During this time he collaborated with songwriter Greg Appel and singer Juliet Ward, and recorded both an EP and an album with cult indie band The Widdershins.

In 1989, aged 27, he joined The Cruel Sea, playing guitar and keyboards. Recording enduring Australian classics, Down Below andThis Is Not The Way Home, the band became a national institution. They toured Europe, won a swag of ARIAs, culminating in 1994’s TheHoneymoon Is Over winning Best Single, Best Album, Best Group and Australian Song Of The Year. The Cruel Sea again toured Europe, this time with Nick Cave.

Another ARIA for 1995’s Three Legged Dog was followed by a USA tour and 1998’s Over Easy, but after Where There's Smoke in 2001, the band slowed down and in 2002 released We Don't Work We Play Music, a last hurrah release of b-sides and unreleased material.

Free to pursue his own eccentricities, Cruickshank released Hymn For Her in 2002, conducted a low-key national tour and, receiving some glowing reviews, began to enjoy the freedom of playing solo.

In 2005 he collaborated with singer songwriter Gyan and cartoonist/poet/philosopher Michael Leunig, resulting in the luminous record Billy The Rabbit. With producer Steve James he completed Hello Human in 2005 and toured Australia and Europe with Mick Harvey and the Kill Devil Hills.

For the past two years, James Cruickshank has spent his time consolidating live work with solo shows and collaborations with Tex Perkins. He has also just completed composing and recording music for Bombora, an ABC documentary on the history of Australian surfing.

In 2010 he toured Europe again in company with the Kill Devil Hills, a triumphant return generating remarkable CD sales and invitations from several French festivals to come back next summer.

James lives under an old church on the North coast of NSW. And some Sundays can be found playing pipe organ to the local congregation.

Ian Fisher is a true man of the road. Growing up along the Mississippi River in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, USA, Ian quickly became accustomed to the constant motion of life. With his big voice and his little guitar, he left physically, but remained musically rooted in the disillusioned Americana of his mid-western home. Strangely at home everywhere, but never really stopping anywhere, Ian fell in love with the road. It was there that the borders between himself and his music were destroyed. The very soul of this talented young artist flows through his music like the mighty Mississippi through his home.

What is the music of Ian Fisher?

When folk & country music listeners hear the music of Ian Fisher, they notice its inspiration drawn from the timeless works of Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and Gillian Welch. When indie listeners hear the music, they can draw connections between it and the works of Wilco, Rufus Wainwright, Bon Iver, and Bright Eyes. But when anyone, regardless of their musical taste, listens to the music of this talented young man, with his little acoustic guitar and big voice, one thing always holds true. They can feel it.

What has Ian Fisher done?

- has written nearly 1,000 songs

- has released 7 albums

- has played over 500 concerts through the US & Europe

What is Ian Fisher doing?

Ian Fisher has three projects of his own:

1. Ian Fisher & The Past – six-piece indie/country band

2. Ian Fisher & The Present – folk/americana duo with Ryan Thomas Carpenter

3. Ian Fisher & The Future – experimental/folk collaboration with Simon Bauer

St Gaudy presents...

ANNA ROSENKILDE (DK)

with support from LUKAS C-R (UK)

post-37242-13385377427636_thumb.jpg

With her spherical songs Danish singer, songwriter and pianist Anna Rosenkilde takes you on a

journey into an atmospheric universe full of snow angels, zebras, civil war, anaesthetics and girls

who have disappeared. Her performance is expressive and adventurous - it is easy to get carried

away by the bended ballads and mesmerising melodies.

Her debut EP “Under the Skin of a Skeleton Zebra” was released in early 2010 through the indie

record company Strange Ears and has been well received by Danish press. It is filled with poetic

lyrics and piano themes that meet filmic sound landscapes. The songs are partly recorded on Anna’s

old upright piano from 1930 that she has inherited from her grandmother. A full length album with

11 new songs is in the works and will be released in the beginning of 2012.

But Anna Rosenkilde also has considerable success as a performing artist. The last couple of years

she has played lots of concerts at venues and festivals in Denmark. Abroad she has played a string

of successful shows in New York, Austin, Berlin and even Mozambique as an exotic Scandinavian

element.

Danish press wrote:

“Talented singer-songwriter and pianist” (GAFFA)

“So beautiful and well performed that it frightens me (…) absolutely addictive” (Bandbase)

“Strongly image-building (...) she performs the songs with melody, strength and grace”

(Undertoner)

“She shows a powerful presence and a fine songwriting talent” (Diskant)

“Simply a joyfully successful ep from a very exciting artist, that we must and will hear more

from. As soon as possible. WOW.” (Geiger)

SONGS AND WHISPERS ... ADAM DONEN (SA)

with support from PASSAROLA PEOPLE (DK) and LASSE MATHIESSEN (DK)

post-37242-13402748636391.jpg

Born in Cape Town, resident in London for 8 years, Adam Donen is a poet, musician and actor. Critically feted across Europe, his songs have been compared to Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel, yet his style is all his own.

Donen has garnered much praise for his consummate stage performances, performing moving, transcendental music that takes you through terror and heartbreak, and out the other side.

His new album, Vampires, was premiered in London at the prestigious King’s Place concert hall, where he was accompanied by a 16-piece orchestra. The album will be released across Europe on 4th May, 2012 on the label “SONGS & WHISPERS” and will be presented live during a tour in June, where he will be accompanied by a 2-piece band.

On 5 April – the day Vampires pre-sales open, Donen will premiere a new classical piece, a requiem, performed by an orchestra at Old St Pancras Church, London, and co-written with The Cure’s Roger O’ Donnell.

Influences: Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel, Johnny Cash, Goethe, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Love, Josh T. Pearson, Tom Waits, Tori Amos, Georg Buchner, William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams

“Making the political personal and vice versa with a cracked vocal and a similarly distorted worldview.” –The Line of Best Fit

SPIRAL FEATHERS

+ GUNMAN AND THE HOLY GHOST

+FRIENDS

post-25183-13475442856285.jpg

The genesis of Spiral Feathers goes back to 2009, sparked by discussions between guitarist Mal Skene and mastering engineer Simon Guertler. Mal had been playing solo on the Berlin circuit, performing original material in a traditional vein, focusing on fingerstyle technique, and a shaped song writing dynamic.

Would these songs benefit from arrangement with other instrumentation? The pair formed an early group – Mal Skene and The Feathers. A live show ensued with support from fellow troubadour Aaron Dall. He added some electric guitar to ‘Sound of Cicadas’, a recently penned ballad. Some listening sessions followed –a range of guitar/vocal albums –with a view to feeling out arrangements. Initial rehearsals and recordings with a small group demonstrated that new elements added to rather than detracted from the effect. Flash forward 6 months or so, and Index spend a day in studio working with Ed East - it’s significant because it’s the first time Skene and Simon Runarsson, both members of the group, would work with Ed in studio.

Not long afterwards Ed came to see Mal Skene and Aaron Dall playing a low-key show. This led to conversations, and ultimately the decision to go in to the studio and put down 10 tracks, with a view to bringing in musicians to ‘complete’ them.

Gunman and The Holy Ghost is a Berlin based band created by Hákon Aðalsteinsson (The Third Sound), playing dark alternative country.

From a review by JJ Baker:

When I started listening to Gunman & The Holy Ghost it actually made me laugh. Such misery! This is melancholy with gristle! This album is barefaced in it’s misery-it doesn’t resist it, it uses it. Song titles like “I Don’t Believe In Love Anymore” and “Oh Lord, Let Me Die In Pain” are pretty good indication of what we’re in for here, though there’s great variation on this deliciously dark album. Opener “The Eight To Five Train To Nothing” snared me right in the lip and I was willfully dragged up through that ink black water and onto the good ship Gunman. A relatively upbeat tune, it has some sad, sad lyrics:

“I would want you here but you’re nowhere near so I just keep steaming on; Into the wilderness and unhappiness right back where I came from”

Lines like this are so damn dark, they bring a smile to my face…

Tonight, kicking off at 8.30pm, The Berlin Folk Society presents ... HANNAH HOWES

Hannah Howes (NZ) has toured South East Asia, Japan, Europe and Australasia, performing to Gucci pop fed Singaporeans, Japan’s elusive underground art scene in Kyoto, Rastafarians in Andalusia and at most boutique venues and major festivals in New Zealand. Her style floats comfortably in the air between political, reggae and folk genres. In each performance Howes’ compelling voice gently delivers the poetry and philosophy that often fails to find its way into contemporary song-writing.

Hannah Howes is joined for a second consecutive year by multi-instrumentalist, Ben Lemi (NZ), offering the UK and Europe another tantalising taste of deep New Zealand flavour.

“Anything but sugary disposable pop... rather an intelligent, sweet mellow offering...

a pleasure” - New Zealand Musician

“Ambitious, intelligent and unpretentious... Howes speaks to the brain heart and

soul” - Dunedin Fringe

“Like Cat Power with shades of Feist” - Christchurch Herald

“Howes’ music had the effect of dragging everyone out of their office asking who it was and that is a rare thing... she’s genius” - Radio New Zealand National

“Clearly articulated philosophies and dreamy lyrics” - Critic Magazine “Compelling singer and storyteller” - Dominion Post

“Her lyrics flicker across the musical canvas like dancers and the meaning of the songs linger long after they take their final curtain call” - Exposure Magazine

Berlin Folk Society presents... Lucie Thorne

Thursday 15th November 2012, 8.30pm

Two of Australia’s finest singer/songwriters.... live at the St Gaudy...

as part of their European tour to celebrate the release of each of their newest albums...

show kicks off at 9pm don't be late free entry, donation after, no frigging worries mate!!!

and a little bit about Lucie...

Lauded for her unique voice, poetic lyricism, and tender-to-gutsy electric guitar playing, Lucie Thorne has earned her place as one of the most striking lyricists and voices of Australian contemporary song. Lucie's latest album, Bonfires In Silver City has garnered extraordinary praise across Australia since it’s release there last year, and has been hailed by many as her best work yet. Further honing her spacious, gritty, “exquisite miniatures of distilled emotion” (The Canberra Times), Bonfires In Silver City brims with that signature warmth and intimacy for which her live shows have become so renowned.

“I’ve been listening to three great female artists in the last month; the first two, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris require little introduction to most, their bodies of work substantial, their standing already verging on legendary. The third is a name lesser known, but her album Bonfires in Silver City is undoubtedly the best of all three. Lucie Thorne is one of our own, and with this album she makes a firm statement that she is one of our finest. World-class.” (Alternative Music Group)

“Thorne writes some of the most simple and beautiful songs you will hear” (The Age)

and a little bit about Matt...

Matt Walker is undoubtedly one of the most respected musicians on the Australian scene. He’s toured with Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Dirty Three, Nick Cave, Tony Joe White, Cat Power and The Black Keys; he’s received two coveted ARIA awards for his music and been nominated several times for Australian music prizes; and his work as a producer, session guitarist and composer is credited on dozens of albums, films and documentary scores. Matt’s highly anticipated new album, In Echoes of Dawn, is his first solo release in seven years, and it’s well and truly worth the wait. A stunning, uplifting piece of work that moves from swamp-soul through to harmony-rich country blues and lilting piano-driven balladry, Matt’s voice is haunting, effortless and pure and his song-writing here is nothing short of a revelation.

And if u got a few minutes check out this top-notch performance by Lucie recently...

All the way from Järna, just outside of Sweden's capital, the duo bring's a taste of Scandinavia to the St. Gaudy Café along with Brittsommar, also from the Scandic land of Sweden!

Snörök builds its music around several instruments ranging from a good ol' guitar, a banjo, wineglasses and even a glockenspiel. The music created is just as impressive as the list of bits and bobs used to create it.

Don't miss out as Sweden revists the café for an unforgettable performance by Snörök and Brittsommar.
