I've noticed of late more and more Horsemeat in the local markets and supermarkets - habe never tried it myself so today I bought some Pferderhuftsteaks which I'll pan fry and serve with ratatouille.

It got me thinking about why I'd not tried it and why it seems such a novelty to me. Being British we don't generally go in for eating horses - but is there actually any good reason for that?

What are your views and experiences?

I'll report back on how it was tomorrow!

I voted no simply because I like horses as an animal that has a personality. For me it would be like eating dogs or cats. I also don't want to eat goats for the same reason. It may not be a good or logical reason, but it is just my personal preference.

Is it really good? Does it have a funny taste like goat does? I just don't want to try and then get disappointed like I did with frog legs. I know it also depends on how it is cooked. Any suggestions for a virgin-mouth-horse-meat-eater? lol!!

We have a horse butcher here in Munich with a stall on the Viktualienmarkt. Unless you get really young foal, the meat has very little fat and the muscle fibres are sshort, so you generally want to use fat for cooking and cut the cooking times drastically. The meat gets dry and tough quickly, and cooking it more done than medium leaves it feeling sort of grainy in your mouth. YMMV.

Try to get the fattiest piece you can; it's not as fatty as it looks.

woof.

I used to eat it in Switzerland. There was no poll item for

Yes - and I would again, except I don't eat meat anymore

People avoid horsemeat for the same reasons they avoid bambi, and whales. Too cute. I couldn't bring myself to eat camel in Australia. I gotta thing for camels & elephants

Seeing as somebody mentioned goat, if you ask the dudes in Cavasoglu Supermarket on Goethestr. in Munich, they can order it for you. Goat is awesome.

Horse meat, I can take it or leave it really.

No, for the same reasons as Moondancer, yes it's not logical or rational, but it is the way it is...

As for goat - NO WAY!!! (we used to have a billy goat as a pet, loved him to bits, I'd always see his face if I were to eat a goat...)

Pigs are lovely animals though, very intelligent too and I eat pork so I don't really know where my logic comes from...
