New Pope could be a Bavarian

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, 78, was one of Pope John Paul's closest advisers. He is also the dean of the College of Cardinals which means he will preside over the funeral. He will address the cardinals before they vote for the next pope. This high profile role makes him a leading candidate for the papacy himself.

Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria. In 1977 he briefly became Archbishop of Munich and Freising before being made a Cardinal.

According to khaleejtimes.com:

Under his meek demeanour lies a steely intellect ready to dissect theological works for their dogmatic purity and debate fiercely against dissenters.

His traditionalist judgments have delighted fellow conservatives and outraged liberal Catholics. In 1986, he issued a firm Vatican denunciation of homosexuality and gay marriage. A 2004 document sternly denounced "radical feminism" as an ideology that undermined the family and obscured the natural differences between men and women.

Or a Nigerian or an Italian. Don't know their names, but those are the big three.

Seems he's a bit old to elected as new pope... as in 6-10 years time they may be electing again...

It has been commented on that that is just what they may want. Sort of a transitional Pope.

Heard yesterday that it doesn't officially have to be a cardinal... Bono for Pope ;)

Apparently the last non-cardinal was "Urban VI" in 1379. You can read the papal requirements here.

Ratzinger has a lot of skeletons in his closet, allegedly.

Keydeck - Thanks for the information. I always thought there was an age requirement...something about a pope raining too long and therefore stagnating the church. Learn something new every day.

If a Bavarian gets to be pope, do you reckon they'll make it a public holiday here?

have read he's a dark horse, only come into serious consideration in the lsat year or so, but he wouldn't be on the list for no reason.

wouldn't mind dropping a lazy fifty on him at Ladbrokes... is that wrong to punt on the pope elections?

1 They keep saying whoever goes into the election as a pope comes out a bishop. In otherwords, the favorites for the job rarely get it.

2 My two cents - if it's another European it will be an italian, if not, it will be a latino (S. or central america).

Course, that just means they don't have a chance now either (see 1) ;-)

Errrm a mate of mine was running a book as a laugh last week, who'd throw a 7 first, the pope, Rainier of Monaco, Thatcher or dark outsider Liz Windsor.

If you're a betting man and can afford it, a fifty on Ratzinger ain't a bad punt.

Dougal: "and do you remember when he took the banana off that other lad"

Ted: "That wasn't a banana Dougal."

Great film "The Passion of Saint Tibilus".

Dougal is 1000-1 and yes people are betting on him (probably to keep the betting ticket).

nigerian won't get up. form's been average, and the fact that he trains on a dry track means he won't do well in european races.

good over the distance though...
