We had a meeting with the agency and basically it's like you say, we will get official written notice soon and our employment will terminate one month from then.

I was under the impression there would be an additional month where they'd be trying to place us somewhere else but that's not the case, unfortunately.

Though at least I've been working at my current job for over 2 years so I'm entitled to unemployment benefit for a year, though since they paid me a pittance I'll have to live on two thirds of a pittance! :(

    Thanks for the tip, jeremyhay.

I have an additional question I hope someone can shed some light on:

My contract was with a Zeitarbeit company, it was an open ended contract, meaning I'd be working indefinitely at the client for the client company they hired me for for as long as they wanted me.

Recently this company decided to do a major restructuring and as a result my whole department was made obsolete and therefore we were all fired, well over 100 of us.

It is my understanding that with my type of contract the Zeitarbeit company has to look for a new job placement for us while keeping us on the pay role for a month, is this correct?

    Thanks pog451,

I still haven't received the letter from my employer so just waiting for that before going down to the unemployment office.

I was just informed I will be unemployed in a couple of months.

I have been working full-time in Germany for over 2 years and I believe I am entitled to unemployment benefit of around 60% of my net salary.

Would I also be entitled to anything to go towards rent? I have a fairly low salary and paying rent will be a struggle if all I get is 60% of my current salary.

I have a Wohnberechtigungsschein and live in subsidized housing, would my rent be adjusted according to my new income?

Does anyone have any suggestions of camping sites not too far from Frankfurt? (Maybe about two hours away)

We would like somewhere with a lake or river for swimming and some nice scenery and ideally something with historical interest, like a castle or other monuments.

We have already camped by St Goar so would be interested in a different place this time.

I guess you're right, when I was a kid we had a cat and he was alone during the day and didn't seem bothered by it, but I guess that's not ideal.

I don't think I can afford two cats, to be honest. And when cats sleep up to 18 hours a day is companionship really that much of an issue?

Thank you both for your replies :)

It seems I don't satisfy some conditions to get a cat from a shelter, they want me to adopt two so they won't get lonely during the day, also as I live on the 8th floor with a balcony they would want me to put some netting which I'm not willing to do.

Is it wrong I still want a cat? I always had cats growing up and I lived on a 5th floor, are balconies that dangerous for cats?

    Hey All,

I'm planning a gay night out tomorrow in Nachtleben. It's a twice monthly club night called Atomic.

The music will be radio-friendly alternative music and it's designed with queers and friends in mind.

If anyone's up for it we're meeting there from 11 pm.

Does anyone know where I can go to adopt a kitten or cat in Frankfurt?

Or is anyone giving away kittens?

I too have noticed the sewer smell in many parts of Frankfurt, I thought it was just me!

I would recommend anyone who's been struggling to find an apartment to apply for a "Berechtigungsbescheinigung für wohnungen", it's a certificate that makes you eligible to apply for social housing.

I do believe you need to be living here for a year before you can apply.

Once I got it finding a flat was fairly simple and quick and I didn't have to jump through hoops trying to woo a landlord.

I had to lol at this!! I'm not Irish but spent 12 years of my youth in Ireland before moving to Germany. That post just about sums up all that's wrong with Ireland. Still, there are good things too.

    I wouldn't go back though.

Countryboy, hope everything's working out for you back in the US!
