Exciting news for bookworms! Hugendubel, the well known German chain of bookstores, have opened an English language branch on Salvatorplatz. Hugendubel have had a branch here (opposite Dukatz) for many years but last Thursday (9.Sep.2004) they re-lauched the shop as 'English language only'. This is now the largest English language bookshop in Munich. Salvatorplatz is in the very center of Munich, a couple of minutes walk from Odeonsplatz. They're open Monday to Saturday from 10am til 8pm. ...

I can't say I'm that impressed. The fiction area is only the size of the one that is/was in the Marienplatz or Karlsplatz stores. Sure, it is more logical to have it all in one place, but don't expect too much.

Hugendubel is the worst bookstore I have seen in the past ten years - they wouldn't stand a chance in North America...

Nevermind the english stuff, I can never find the mainstream German novels that I'm looking for in Hugendubel.

I recently noticed that there's a metric shitload of second-hand books on ebay. There's even lots of english books in the german site.

Otherwise, the Wordsworth/Anglia pair of bookshops on Schellingstrasse, near the University, are pretty good (and friendly and helpful) these days. Not cheap though.

i was in the hugendubel english book store today and was mostly pleased. looks as if they are still stocking the shelves as there was an entire downstairs section that was darkened. they also didn't have a travel section other than the local munich/bavaria stuff. but all in all there is a decent selection of books overall. i like wordsworth and anglia quite a bit as well. nice to have a few different stores selling english language books!

I totally agree with Murray above. The staff at Wordsworth are knowledgeable and friendly. I like to support small, cosy, individually run neighborhood bookshops.

Fantastic! I finally made a trip to the store on Salvatorplatz and had a mini "O"! Their selection is fantastic; everything from crime thrillers, to fiction, to beauty & lifestyle, to childrens books! I was very impressed. I used to just have to take whatever I could get, but this time I actually got to browse.
Agreed Wordsworth is a great store, but it's great to have something central too. No travel section, but alas, you can't have home away from home.
