Did you know that Britain has the densest concentration of CCTV cameras in the world? Yep, the island monkeys have a cool 2.5 million cameras, making up 10 per cent of the world's total. By comparison Munich has a very low density. There are 101 CCTV cameras dotted around the streets of the city (14 for traffic, 87 for police security). If you're feeling paranoid you can go visit the Grosse Bruder (Engl: Big Brother) website to find out where they all are. There are even photos of each and every camera. The most heavily protected locations are the Bavarian Interior Ministry at Odeonsplatz (16 cams) and the Bavarian State Chambers between Franz-Josef-Strauß-Ring and Hofgarten (19 cams). The US Consulate on Königinstrasse, next to the English gardens, always was heavily guarded. And since the dreadful terrorist attacks of 9th November they now have six high-tech cameras which can swivel and zoom.

There'll be 12 powerful security cameras at the Oktoberfest this year (that's more than ever before, last year there were only 7). These cameras watch over 'high risk' areas such as behind the tents where there is likely to be trouble (sexual harassment, fights, and thefts). See the: SZ article for more (in German).

Much as I dislike surveillance in general, this is a good thing. The Oktoberfest is an incredibly dangerous place after dark - there's an insane number of incredibly violent attacks and rapes every year.

Insane number of violent attacks and rapes? I think you had a Maß too many. Yes, there are sometimes attacks and sexual assaults, but nothing that could qualify as "insane numbers". Unless you consider less than 8 to be insane. I don't have a problem with the cameras, I have a problem with you saying it's a dangerous place.

There's something like 5 rapes or so at the Oktoberfest every year. That's an insane number to me. I don't know about numbers for serious non-sexual assaults, but any regular Oktoberfest visitor has seen seriously serious violence in and out of the tents.

Quick googling gave me the following links: Polizei Bayern - Wiesn Stats
Ganz Muenchen - Oktoberfest Sicherheit

There are some actual numbers here, if you search down for Vorläufige Wiesn-Bilanz 2003

Hi Show'Em

Well I have been going to every Oktober Fest for the last 10 Years, and I go for almost every night (I take hols to do this ) and I must say I have never NEVER seen any rape, beating up, fight, etc. I am not saying that it doesn't happen bUt 8 attempted rapes is sad but not really many. I left Manchester where a normal night consisted of 15 to 20 Attempted rapes, 4 Armed robberies, 2 gunshot deaths by Druggies, several stabbings. All this per night!.
So lets get this into perspective...
See ya ... and May the Wiesn be with you

"but any regular Oktoberfest visitor has seen seriously serious violence in and out of the tents."

Prior to last year I was at the each Oktoberfest for the previous 6 years. Each year I would visit between 3 and 8 times or thereabouts. I have never seen serious violence there. A few little pushing and shoving scraps which are quickly sorted out by security. Nothing more.

I know that there are serious crimes which occur but nothing excessive in my opinion. With that many people and that much drink of course there are going to be problems, but I certainly wouldn't call them "seriously serious" or "insane". It's simply not true.
