Run by Martin (a German) and Rosie from Mexico, this place serves probably some of the best Mexican food in Germany. The Mole just tastes right and the cocktails are suitably strong. It is pretty rustic and all the better for that, sofas up in the lounge area, sombreros hanging up, but instead of looking like they were bought as a job lot, the decoration works. If something on the small menu says it is hot, then it really is. Spanish, English and German spoken. A real hidden gem in Berlin.

I tried this place yesterday. It was great, the food, the place, the people. Great and cheap food in the middle of no where, but still a \"must go to eat place\" lol. Scott
Posted by: Scottagain at 6:24 pm on 6.Apr.2007Ate here about 2 weeks ago and I must say the food was excellent. Nearest u-bahn is Zinowitzerstrasse U-Bahn (not Oranienburger Tor as mentioned in the review) Staff friendly, laidback and set in a no frills Cantina style. The mole as said is excellend as well and the fresh homemade (and properly spiced) salsa. I definite return is planned for moi!
Posted by: Deccie at 4:33 pm on 4.Jun.2007Dunno if I'm spoilt when it comes to Mexican food or what, but we visited Viva Mexico with great expectations after reading the comments above and I afraid to say..we were somewhat disappointed. The first three things we asked for on the menu, they did not have, there was no tap beer and when my wife recieved her tacos they resembled a soft small pigs ear with a filling so meagre you needed a microscope to see it...sure the price was fairly cheap, but 5euros for three tiny flimsy tacos with a half a lettuce leaf and a teaspoon of refried beans is a joke..We both enjoy Mexican food and hope there's better than this here in Berlin.
Posted by: kiwibro at 10:51 pm on 13.Jun.2007i visited this place with a group of friends about 2 weeks ago, and it was a real let-down. when we arrived, we sat at the table & waited about 15 minutes before anyone even took our drinks order. then we waited another 15 minutes until they actually arrived--the beer was warm & flat. they did happily replace our round, however. our food order took forever to arrive, and when it did, 3 of 8 dishes were wrong. they ran out of guacamole, chopped steak, and bottled still water, but neglected to tell us and simply tried to replace the item with something else we didn't order. my friends tried to give this place a second chance last week, but ended up leaving after waiting 1.5 hours to only have their drink order filled. the food is mediocre, as is the service--i wouldn't recommend going here.
Posted by: "elf" at 12:40 pm on 18.Jun.2007We visited this little place two years ago on our first visit to Berlin, on the first night, and had a lovely time. So this time round we returned with some trepidation after reading these awful reviews, but it was so close to our apartment and we were too tired to cook... so we thought we'd chance it. I do wonder sometimes whether people's expectations of restaurants are ridiculously high - I mean what were those customers doing waiting for 1.5 hours? Could you not have had a chat to find out what the problem was? The place is tiny - it's not as if it's easy to lose your waiter there! This restaurant is family run and a bit ragged around the edges, not a big deal to us, but just to manage expectations - let's get specific rather than vague. We were welcomed warmly and I had a delicious icy Cuban Libre nestled in my sticky paw within five minutes of sitting down. The waitress had a long chat with us and recommended a starter, which we went for and we had a mooch over our mains, we weren't rushed, and were given more advice about our orders when we queried stuff. Starter was on the table within five minutes and mains followed swiftly behind. The portions were very generous - with piles (not teaspoons) of refried beans, enchilladas and more nachos. The bill came to €35 and included a cocktail and a beer with two soft drinks - and was frankly ridiculous - the cocktail alone would have set me back £8 at least, anywhere in London. To put 'Viva Mexico' into context - the food is basic fare but delicious and cheap - the service isn't obsequious - thank goodness - I really never want the default setting of homogenous insincerity 'have a nice day' that seems to be sweeping the world. It was a nice place to start the evening - we ate well, we enjoyed it and we'll go back.
Posted by: "Sarah" at 2:27 pm on 9.Jul.2007My boyfriend and I were looking for some good Mexican food last weekend and gave Viva Mexico! a chance. Since we just came back from vacation in Mexico in March, our standards are pretty high. My boyfriend had the Jumbo Burrito with Hackfleisch, and I had the Vegetarian Burrito. They both came with salad, which was colorful with a large assortment of peppers and corn. The Vegetarian Burrito came as 3 mini burritos covered in a sundried tomato sauce, which looked and tasted very good. My boyfriend also liked his Burrito. The sauces are very important in good MX cusine. There was a Salsa Verde, a sweet but hot red-chili sauce, and another salsa. They were just like you find in Mexico. The beer on tap was cold, but a little flat. I recommend the bottled beers there. The service was friendly, and the beers and food were served in a timely manner:) Prices were cheap: 0,5l. beer 3,-€, burritos 5-6,- €, chips and salsa 3,-€. This is a new favorite of mine!
Posted by: sailorettei14 at 11:48 am on 6.Aug.2007After being disappointed by all the other Mexican restaurants in Berlin, my boyfriend and I went to Viva Mexico! last weekend. It was pretty busy and as normal restaurants in Berlin go, understaffed. It took a bit of time to get our margaritas but they were strong and tasty. Our starter came quickly (the chips and guacamole and salsa) and were really nice! Our main courses were even better - I had the enchiladas with mole sauce and my boyfriend had the tacos with hackfleisch. I come from Colorado and have lived in both California and Nevada, all areas that have amazing Mexican food so I was thrilled to finally find a spot in Berlin that serves delicious Mexican food. Even though the service was slow, they were really nice and apologetic about it and gave us a couple drinks on the house. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant on a regular basis.
Posted by: MissDigital at 1:10 pm on 25.Aug.2007hey... well after reading some of the comments on the top i have only 3 things to say: -the tacos are soft(not hard like in all the other mex-so-called restaurants), and they are actually twice the size you would buy them on the streets in mexico, not to forget, they are delicious... -yeah, the service is a little slow, but friendly(belive me i have been to other places, not only mex. in germany and they wouldnt be only slow but rude too...)the lady behind the kitchen explained me that maybe the food would take a little longer, becouse having herself being the only mexican in the kitchen she would not let anyone else in there(exept her dougther), and i mean, the day i was there it was packed. - and last, i really think that people should comment if they know what they are talking about, dont forget that tacos are not hard and not all mexican food's spicy, and yes, they do have cars in mexico, donkeys are not so in style anymore... god, i love the enchiladas verdes....Rosi I'm coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: "anika" at 12:17 pm on 30.Aug.2007i've been coming to berlin five years in a row now and every year my first stop is having a bite at rosi's place. ofcourse it's not one of those restaurants that look really classy.. that woudln't even fit. rosi's a small, tender woman that cooks everyday from 5 p.m. till 11 p.m.. ofcourse if the place is packed she won't be as quick if she only has three people waiting.. you know. but you can find that at every restaurant. the food is delicious. seriously. the tacos are as said before bigger then in mexico, the mole is just out of this world. the spicyness of her salsas are delicious.. especially if you don't eat too much spicy it's good because everybody can spice their food as they want.. except you order the enchiladas verdes.. but if not it's great.. the tablespoon amount of beans is a huge bis joke... you get enough and can even order more. rosi's girls are so heartwarming. mostly her daughters work there. the older one is so funny. she makes delicious maragaritas and really knows what she's doing. the younger one only works there when it's packed and rosi needs help..but she also knows what she's doing AND... both speak english, german and spanish fluently. it's a little out of the way but it's worth the trip..!!!
Posted by: "maria-carla" at 3:51 pm on 13.Sep.2007I gave Viva Mexico a chance for real mexican food.. well... no bad but service is awful.. i still get my tortillas from La Tortilla Atomica.
Posted by: "Simone" at 7:12 am on 2.Dec.2007I've been to Viva Mexico two times now. It's a pretty nice little mexican joint, and I'm sure I'll go back again, but it definitely hasn't ended my search for "real" Mexican food in Berlin. And by real Mexican I mean American Mexican. :-) How can quesadillas not come with sour cream? Blows my mind.
Posted by: MarkL at 9:07 pm on 3.Feb.2008Went yesterday. Disappointing because they were out of alot of stuff. Margaritas were good - green salsa was great, as were the chips it came with. We were missing 1 of the 3 salsas (they were out of it) and the other, while spicy was mediocre at best. The combo plate was decent, but others at the table seemed to enjoy theirs better. They suggested we come back on a Tuesday or Wednesday when they weren't out of so much stuff. Dually noted.
Posted by: phoenix-rose at 4:07 pm on 2.Mar.2008Nope, Sorry. This isnt Mexican food. But then again, the owners probably found the cheapest viable solutions to present, knowing that Germans do not hold quality in the highest regard. Germans would literally eat dog shit, as long as it was cheap. Germans: quantity over quality.
