If you get caught in a thunderstorm on a Tuesday night in Kreuzberg whilst looking for somewhere to eat, you could do a lot worse than nipping into Safran, a little café/restaurant just down from Oranienplatz which serves Persian food. Bare wooden tables seating a maximum of about 20 people and minimalist décor, a mix of regulars and others and a charming and helpful waitress all made for a pleasant and relaxed eating experience with cuisine which was new to me.
I had mixed kebabs (beef fillet, lamb and Hackfleisch), served with saffron and butter rice, lots of salad and Bratkartoffeln and it was delicious, as well as showing a complete lack of 'portion control'. Don't bother with a side salad or whatever, because it comes on the plate, together with a nice yoghurt dip. They also serve draft Pilsener Urquell, which is an added bonus.
Not a posh joint by any means, but a pleasant, friendly, little neighbourhood restaurant. Give it a try!
