Amrit - Oranienburgerstr., Berlin, Germany

Fantastic food, if you haven't tried it you should. About as good as you'll get in Germany...
Posted by: "Gav" at 9:54 am on 9.Apr.2003I had a chicken vindaloo here just yesterday. Ok, so the food was very reasonable, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was fantastic. As usual for Germany, the curry was no where near as strong as what you might expect in England. My vindaloo was about as spicey as a mild English jalfrezi. Service wasn't great either. OK, so admittedly it may be one of the best Indians in Berlin (although I've not tried that many). But it's certainly not the best in Germany. I can think of three off the top of my head in Munich which are better (Sitar, Namaskar, Satluj).
Posted by: "James" at 5:42 am on 28.Apr.2003this place is my favorite Indian restaurant in Berlin. i recommend the daily lunch specials which are tasty, filling & cheap. it's almost too much food for one person! the service is always friendly, too.
Posted by: elf at 12:48 pm on 18.Jun.2007Spent a weekend in Berlin and was happy to see this place near our apartment. turned out to be really good, fresh Indian. Also the nan was very tasty. I highly recommend.
Posted by: dolfan at 11:16 am on 25.Jun.2007I went to the Amrit near Mehringdamm metro, and was thoroughly dissapointed. The service was terrible, and the food tasted like it had come straight out of a tesco curry sauce jar. Maybe the one in East Kreuzberg is better, but i'm gonna try the others in the area first. Any good tips on other Indians with more authentic food?
Posted by: "Ian" at 9:26 am on 4.Sep.2007Dear dolfan you said "I went to the Amrit near Mehringdamm metro..." - this is no Amrit Restaurant @ Mehringdamm! In Berlin are 3 Amrit Restaurants at the Oranienstrasse 202/203, Oranienburger Strasse 45 and Winterfeldtstrasse 40. Cheers ...
Posted by: "Bans & Bans" at 4:47 pm on 8.Oct.2007Visited Amrit on Oranienburger Strasse last night purely based on the recommendations on this page. I'm commenting to prevent anyone else making the same mistake. In short, the food was terrible and to make matters worse, incredibly expensive for Berlin. Ordered: Onion Bhaji (starter) Lamb Dansak Chicken Madras Aloo Saag 1x Naan 3x Warsteiner Beers Cost: €50 (with service) Firstly, onion bhajis are small balls comprised of onion and seasoned flour batter. What we got was a huge mound of battered onion 'chips'. These were soggy. Poppadoms were nice and spicy though. Assume these were shop-bought ;-) My lamb dansak (Lamb Dansak should be red in colour, slightly sweet and sour, picant) was in fact a brown lentil mush. Gristley lamb. I decided this dish was actually the German speciality Linsentopf (brown lentil stew) with a bit of curry powder chucked in. And kidney beans! Kidney beans, in a curry? For some reason there was some grated cheese on top of the bubbling brown pool. My girlfriends Madras was actually a Korma (I know this because the waiting staff had a little discussion before dumping it on our table... like "will they notice if we just say it's a Madras?") Anyway, this Korma had TONS of cheese on top, and lacked any particular taste save for an excessive saltiness. The Saag Aloo was €8.50, which is excessive for what on English menus is a side dish. It was middling in quality, and as such the 'highlight' of the meal. If you've ever tasted a good curry in your life (all English people have ready access to good curries, Americans I'm not sure, Indians don't even bother) then Amrit will be an insult to your tastebuds. If you've never tasted a good curry and want to be robbed, Amrit is the place for you!
Posted by: Tim sailplane at 4:38 pm on 16.Mar.2008I have eaten the set lunch at Amrit on Oranienburger Str. It was simply a refueling exercise and I didn't have very high expectations of it as a dining experience but was still disappointed. It was something with lamb in a brown sauce - simply tasteless but remarkably greasy even by Indian standards. Presumably there was a side dish but the specific recollection of it escapes me - something green and sludgy? - and the usual rice and bread spaceship thing. It (and its sister branches) are one of the few locations in Berlin where I will go past and actively remember not to ever go there again.
