Gasthof Adler is located in Weil am Rhein, an industrial suburb of Basel although on the German side of the borde. One wouldn't expect to find such an excellent restaurant here.

In fact there are two restaurants - a michelin starred place with an extensive wine list and good food. The meat is excellent (veal, beef and lamb were all tried) and the fish was fresh (as one would expect). My only complaint is that the creme brulee was served warm, although the pistachio ice cream set it off nicely. All in all what one would expect of a michelin starred place, including the price.

However, the real gem here is the bar food. The bar is called Keller Spatz and has a terrace or a keller. The food is exceptional and great value for money (main at €14). It is cooked by the same chefs who cook in the main restaurant and it shows. The trout for starters was filleted very well and the home made horseradish sauce was perfect. Sardines for starter were even better - nice and crispy skin, tender flesh. Great. (each €9 I think).
The mains are where it gets really good. Pan fried Kalbsleber was wonderful, melt in your mouth deliciousness. The gnocchi with beef fillet was perfect - not too heavy or stodgy. The Grillteller has about ten different kinds of meat (including probably a Spatz!) and my colleague struggled to finish it. This place is great and I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
