Bootshaus is a café/bistro adjacent to the Mannheim telecommunications tower. It has a panorama view of the Neckar and offers a comfortable, spacious spot to enjoy a delicious romantic dinner for two. In the summer there's a large terrace for just sipping coffee and watching the joggers and walkers burn off their winter calories.

Although the Bootshaus is more famously known for its lavish and exclusive parties, anyone who wants a better quality meal than what some of downtown Mannheim has to offer, won't be disappointed. Their menu offers a wide range of exquisite starters and tasty soups, creative mixed salads and hearty main dishes, desserts and a large drinks and wine menu.
Since this was a birthday dinner and I was paying, I wanted to eat what I never usually would, so I started my meal with a delicious pumpkin cream soup (6,50) then moved onto my main dish: two hearty slices of duck, roasted with a vanilla-flavored crust, presented on a bed of pumpkin and schupfnudeln (potatoes rolled into pinky-sized, torpedo-shaped sticks) with a sherry-vinegar sauce (18,50). My dining partner had medium-cooked roast beef with tagliatelle and stewed cocktail tomatoes covered in a sage-horseradish sauce. His starter, a mixed Italian salad (4,50) contained bits of sprouts and endives, roma tomatoes, corn, bell peppers and with a tasty oil and balsamico dressing. To drink, we each had a 0,4 l (4,50) riesling/prosecco spritzer, with dash of lime. Very refreshing!
But despite us "going all out", you could get tortellini filled with spinach and ricotta for less than 10 or a glass of chardonnay for 4. A large salad started at 6,50. They also do a sunday brunch for 16,50 which includes a hot drink of your choice. children between 5 and 12 are only 8,50. under 5 are free.
If you don't want to drive, take the OEG tram #5 towards Heidelberg and get out at "Fernmeldeturm".

I should add, they have menus in English and the Sunday brunch for children between 5 and 12 costs 8,50. You cannot buy children for that cheap :)
